🌟 Ever thought of God's commandments as more than just a set of rules? • Here's the thing about laws… • They actually have a lot more to say about the person who creates the law than the person who may or may not be following them. • So every time there's a rule, the person who creates the rule is telling you a little bit about themself. • And it’s no different when it comes to The 10 Commandments. • God didn’t give us the commandments to rule over us and take away our freedoms. • Nope! • Every commandment is a divine gift that God wants to give to us and protect from our enemies: • Our old Adam sinful nature • The devil himself • The ideologies of the world • They want to wreak havoc. • They want to deceive. • They want to twist and to pervert. • And God gives us these commandments to protect His good gifts to us. • The 1st Commandment • God wants us to have Him. • He's a jealous God. • He wants to be our God, because in Him we have forgiveness, life, and salvation. • The 2nd Commandment • God's name is so powerful that he gives it to you with purpose. • And with his name He gives you His reputation, His identity, and His doctrine. • When He commands us not to misuse His name, it's because His name is powerful and full of truth. • It’s a name we can call upon in times of trouble, a name that brings peace and clarity when the world gets chaotic. • But when we actually do destroy a gift of God by breaking a commandment, then we are called to repentance and contrition so that we might have open ears to hear Jesus, the forgiveness of sins, the one who fulfills the law in our stead, the one who kept that law perfectly in our stead. • If you have any questions at all about the 1st and 2nd commandment, we encourage you to read Luther’s Small Catechism and talk to your Pastor. • Contributor Rev.
