The original soundscape of Silent Nigth (way back in the 1830s.) • Short history: • Sung for the first time in 1818 in Tirol (Oberndorf, at the end of a Christmas service), this song was brought to Germany by travelling merchant families, • from Zillertal (like the 'Strassers') • They sang it at the markets to enhance the sale of their goods. • Breakthrough in the 1830s in Leipzig, where the 'Strasser-family were asked to sing it at a church service and during the 'break' of a New Years concert in the 'Gewandhaus'. The song had become 'salonfähig' and the family Strasser became popular in 'higher society'. It's the early days of the Era of Romanticism, with its interest in folklore, and national traditions. In 1839 it crossed the Atlantic. • A little later it was picked up by the 'Innere Mission', inserted in hymnbooks for soliders etc. The official church remained hesitant to include it in official hymnbooks. • More: https://mobidick.wursten.be/
