Whyalla, a city located on the eastern coast of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. • Whyalla is a lovely city with a stunning coastline, great lookouts, and an amazing jetty. • The city has most things you would expect such as major shopping brands and services. We have friends here and it was great to catch up with them and have made a promise to not leave it quite so long without a catch up. It was also a great place to stop, get the car serviced, do the shopping and the laundry, and generally ‘take a breather’. • Whyalla, located on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, is often referred to as the Steel City due to its significant steel production industry. The town's steelworks have been a central part of Whyalla’s economy and identity. The development of the steelworks in the 1960s marked the beginning of Whyalla's transformation from a small coastal town to a major industrial centre. • The naming of Whyalla is unclear. The name Whyalla could be derived from the Aboriginal word Weila, meaning place with deep water. This reflects the area's connection to the sea, which has been central to its development and identity. Or it may have been derived from the aboriginal word in the Barngarla language, ‘Kayalla’, meaning ‘Northern Country’. • Established as Hummocks Hill in the early 1900s, the town began as a small settlement serving as a port for shipping iron ore from the nearby Middleback Ranges. As the settlement grew, particularly with the expansion of the steel industry, the name was changed to Whyalla to better represent the town's status and aspirations as a significant industrial hub. The new name also honoured the Indigenous heritage of the region. It was named Whyalla in the 1920s. • YouTube @jabindajoey LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, hit the bell to GET NOTIFIED • Follow us on our wonderful journey around Australia, our homeland • Music from #Uppbeat https://uppbeat.io/t/ra/blooming-flower License code: VCIP2SL1W57RZDIG
