WHAT’S THE ONOS? BLACK FRIDAY • Today “What’s The Onos” goes to Black Friday! We thought - what would be easy to pick-up and easy to eat? And what would fit conveniently in a Manaola back pack or tote as you hit the shoppes and lines. We’re enjoying selections that are “ono” favorites and trying “onos” that have received “best of 2021” awards. • • If you’re up at dawn, head to the ROYAL KITCHEN for their DIM SUM AND CHOW FUN BOX. When the business opened in 1974, they were among the first shoppes to sell baked baos. The shoppe has many varieties of baked baos, Chinese dishes and noodles. The Star-Advertiser gave Royal Kitchen its Hawaii’s Best 2021 award for manapua. Find them at 100 North Beretania Street, Shop 175, Chinatown, (808) 524-4461. Daily hours are 5:30am to 3pm, except for Sunday when its open from 6:30-2:30. • • While in Chinatown, head over to the SING CHEONG YUAN BAKERY that won HONOLULU MAGAZINE’s BEST OF HONOLULU AWARD 2021 for its DAN TAT. Dan tat is the Chinese name for custard tarts. The Yuan bakery’s dan tat is silky smooth with a shortbread like crust. Pastry is made all day long at 1027 Maunakea St., (808)531-6688. The bakery is open from 7a-5pm daily. • If you’re in Chinatown later in the morning, grab a CHIRASHI DELUXE from MAGURO BROTHERS. We had a blind taste test last year for sashimi and Maguro Brothers was the winner - not only in taste and quality but also in cost value. They are in the back of the Kekaulike Market, (808) 259-7100. Open daily from 9-2:30, closed Sundays. • If you’re heading to town from the west side, stop at TAMASHIRO MARKET. The first Tamashiro Market opened in Hilo in 1941. Due to the tsunamis that demolished the market, Chosen and Yoshiko Tamashiro moved family and market to O`ahu. Tamashiro’s at 802 North King St. is open daily (except for Christmas and New Year’s days) 8-5:00, closes at 4:00 on Sundays.) The grandsons of Chosen and Yoshiko run the operation and offer fish direct from local fishermen and the fish auction. They were one of the first retailers to sell poke on a large scale offering over 30 preparations. Tamashiro says “the fish in our poke is not just “freshly made, it is FRESH!” Call the market at 808-841-8047. • Another combo that’s easy to pack is a sandwich and salad. Up by the University is KOKUA MARKET NATURAL FOODS. The market is the only natural foods cooperative in Hawai’i that is having its fair share of challenges to keep going. Founded in 1971, Kokua Market’s motto is “More Ono. More Pono.” They make bountiful sandwiches to “grab and go” plus offer a deli, grocery section and bins to buy in bulk. Kokua Market is open 9am to 7pm Mon-Sat, Sunday 10-5. 2643 South King Street (808) 941-1922. • To complete your sandwich/salad combo, stop at LA PIZZA RINA, a little hole in the wall on King St., just pass Keeaumoku, 1425 S. King St. They are known for their Antipasto salad and 12” subs. Pizza is pretty good too. Every thing is homemade and salad is a nice change of pace. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM; 5:00 PM - 10:00 PM on Sundays. You can pick up a salad the night before or have it as an option on your way home. (808) 941-6634. • And now, the winner of Honolulu Magazine’s Best Burger Award, 2021 - the Reader’s Pick, goes to CHUBBIES BURGERS. This is a food truck located at 960 Auahi St, in the parking lot at ‘Ohana Market (near Starbucks). Open Tuesday-Sunday 10:30am - 9:00pm (Closed Mondays). In 2016, Jeffrey Nedry, the owner, became the first eatery to offer a fresh, smash burger. He makes his own potato bun and worked with ranchers to create the ideal blend of fresh ground beef. He also makes a liliko’i small pie with a layer of haupia cream and macadamia nuts! This is a little bit juicy for a “grab and go” but we had to try this award-winning burger! • To Access the Black Friday Shopper - go to ManaolaHawaii.com/events. • To Subscribe to the monthly Newsletter - go to ManaolaHawaii.com/newsletter. • To Download the app go to the App Store or GooglePlay • Follow us on Instagram @manaolaHawaii • Find us on Facebook @manaolaHawaii • Watch our channel on Youtube • Pearlridge (808) 379-0001 • Ala Moana (808) 943-6262
