Combating Pet Allergies

We love our furry friends…but pet allergens are no joke. “I get this all the time. A lot of people they have constant daily symptoms and it’s because what they’re allergic to what lives with them,” said Allergist and Immunologist Dr. Laura Veras. More than half of US households have a cat or dog releasing pet dander into the home. “Sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, postnasal drip, and even asthma can be triggered by it.” • If you have symptoms, Dr. Veras said the best thing you can do is to limit your exposure, but that’s not always realistic. That’s where allergy immunotherapy injections can help. “We actually give you shots with whatever you’re allergic to…We start with very diluted concentrations giving you these injections once or twice a week slowly increase in the dose, and by doing that, we’re turning your immune system to become tolerant to these things you’re allergic to and better control your symptoms…It is a long process, it’s not a quick fix. Allergy immunotherapy is for a period of 3 to 5 years.” • Although it’s not a simple fix, the shots tend to be effective. “Most individuals at the end of their treatment they continue to have the same good symptom control as when they were on their shots,” said Dr. Veras.
