Watch the 4th Place Winners of the 2013 Merrie Monarch Festival Hula Kahiko (Kane Division) as Hālau Hula ʻO Kahikilaulani, led by Kumu Hula Nāhōkūokalani Gaspang, perform the powerful “Nā Nalu O Hawaiʻi”. This mesmerizing performance honors Hawaii’s famous surf spots and the traditions of ancient Hawaiians who would leave their homes when the call Ua piʻi mai ka nalu! (Surf’s up!) echoed through the village. In this mele, the surfers would chant “Kū mai, kū mai ka nalu” (The surf looms forth), summoning the great waves. The hula pays homage to the connection between the people of Hawaii and the ocean, showcasing a deep cultural reverence for the sport of surfing. At Support Local Hawaii, we are proud to share the stories of Hawaiian culture and celebrate the beauty of hula.
