Designer Manish Malhotra's townhouse has an instant impression of a generous, wholesome family home strewn with flowers and a table spread full of food. He moved into this townhouse, an anomaly in a city known for its towering skyscrapers, seven years ago, and along with designer Kunal Shah, set out to remodel the space to create a haven for him and his parents with their own personal floors, a lounge and dining area, and the terrace, all in line with vastu and feng shui principles. • Malhotra’s home is classic, comfortable, functional, tinged with nostalgia, flushed in natural light, surrounded by trees, and built around an open-to-sky courtyard. I spend the whole day with bling and shine and embroideries and colour…so when I come home, it’s not what I want at all. I kind of like a lot more quietness, I like minimalism. I love whites and off-whites, a lot of greenery, filled with fresh flowers, a lovely fragrance and for the home to be welcoming, says Malhotra. • “I have a great sync with Gauri Khan (@gaurikhan). She understands space,” Malhotra says, about the additional 5,000 square feet that he is adding to the existing 11,000-square-foot home, designed in collaboration with the interior designer. “It’s an extension, and in a way a new look. I want it more modern, more minimal, but still a home; it has to have my art, my personality.
