Which of these 2 takedowns is best for BJJ? (Sasae vs. Seoi Nage) • Most people would agree the Sasae, because you don’t get your back taken if it fails. • In my quest to find the best takedowns for BJJ, I found John Danaher explaining his 6 criteria for choosing takedowns. • They are: • Back exposure • Neck exposure • Belt exposure • Body weight exposure • Roll through exposure • Degree of difficulty • This narrows our options down to a few high-percentage, low-risk takedowns: • Foot sweeps • Ankle picks • And collar drags • (In the video, Danaher also shows some drop versions of Tai Otoshi and Osoto Gari that use your body weight to mitigate some risks.) • Collar drags and ankle picks have a bonus, because they have a sweeping counterpart. You can pull guard and still “take someone down” with an ankle pick or collar drag (really, this is a sweep or reversal but scored 2 points just like a takedown would be), with similar mechanics as their standing versions. • There are ways to mitigate the risks of all takedowns, but we should remember that wrestling and judo have different rules and goals than BJJ, so we should take the best parts of each and adapt them to our sport. • What other criteria do you have for picking takedowns? Do these principles also apply to no-gi? Comment below! • #bjj #bjjtechnique #jiujitsu #wrestling #judo #sambo #mma #bjjmotivation
