Considered by many as the greatest locomotive of all time, Sir Nigel Gresley’s Class A4 was a great example of 1930s streamlining. Gresley was inspired by the German diesel-powered high speed train, the Flying Hamburger, but stuck with steam power as it could pull more passengers. • Wind tunnel tested and perfected, the first A4’s were introduced in 1935 to power a new streamlined train from London to Newcastle. The most famous A4 is the Mallard which in 1938 set a world speed record of 126mph which still stands to this day • Thirty-five of the class were built and they remained in service on the East Coast mainline until the early 1960s when they were replaced by Deltic diesel locomotives. • What makes it great… the fastest and (arguably) most beautiful steam locomotive ever. • Time Warp… An average journey from London to Newcastle took 4 hours, which is amazingly only an hour longer than the same journey today! • This film features actor/comedian/petrolhead Chris Barrie driving the loco of his dreams and explaining some of its cleverest design features. • Like us on Facebook / 220891107929481 • Follow us on Twitter / engineporntv
