Antonio Guterres served as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 to December 2015. During his tenure at the refugee agency, he tackled the issue of the exodus of people from Syria and Iraq, which was among the worst displacements the world had ever seen in decades. The current UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said Guterres would be an excellent choice to be the international body's new chief.
