Oklahoma is the home of the Navy Admiral Marc Mitscher. He was born in Wisconsin, but quickly moved to Oklahoma City where his father got involved into politics. Marc was sent to Washington D.C. for his education. In 1904 he was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy, in Annapolis Maryland where he got the nickname Oklahoma pete. He got a passion for Aviation, and got training aboard the U.S.S South Carolina. He assumed the command of the U.S.S. Hornet in 1941. He then was promoted a flag rank in 1942, Rear Admiral. He was battle tested at Midway, and later at philippine sea, iwo jima, and okinawa. In 1946 he became the commander of the 8th fleet. He died in February 1947. He was best remembered in WWII for Fast Carrier Task Force Commander. • http://www.distinctlyoklahoma.com
