This is a collection of animations of macrophage phagocytosis, created by Weizhuang Zhou, Kate Brown, Julie Theriot, Fabian Ortega, Nancy Zhang and Zoe Assaf, participants in Stanford BIOS 213 Spring 2014. • Macrophages ( big eaters , from Greek makros large + phagein eat ) are important cells in our immune system, acting as part of the first line of defense against disease-causing organisms. As their name suggests, macrophages phagocytose or engulf a variety of things, ranging from bacterial pathogens to normal cellular debris. • It's fun to see what aspects of macrophage biology each person chose to highlight in their animation. • Learn more about macrophages here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macrophage
