In the distance I could see what looked like a small cottage. And now, I know that it was Creekflow who was standing there. But when it happened, all I could see was this sort of amorphous darkness with two, bright eyes staring back at me from the entrance to the cottage. • The journey to the cottage was permeated very strongly by the scent of the carrion. All the bodies appeared freshly slain. I still couldn’t tell what was real and what wasn’t. The once clear blue sky had shifted into this sort of indiscernible clutter of bizarre colours and geometry. I couldn’t even really tell what time of day it was. The grass was dying, the flowers were wilting, and — right before my eyes — the trees were shedding all of their leaves. All the while, I could hear Creekflow’s voice in my head. It spoke both beguilingly and contemptuously. I couldn’t really gauge its intentions, but it continually ridiculed me. • When I finally had reached the cottage, I opened the door to find a dark void. I couldn’t see anything. Yet, when I stepped into the darkness, it was as if light was cast onto me from the outside. I could still see myself clearly. • From out of the darkness appeared Creekflow, once more. We were face to face. I could finally get a good look at it. It looked like me but there were strange differences that I couldn’t explain very precisely. Its demeanor was more poised and shrewd, to be certain. It held itself up in a way that felt commanding and stoic. Creekflow reached out to me and pulled me to it. Miraculously, Creekflow was slightly taller than me. • We began to dance in the darkness. All we could see was each other. While it led my steps, Creekflow spoke of a grand design in which it sought to destroy the universe as we know it. It would rebuild everything into its own vision. I didn’t know what to say. But when it had completed its thoughts and manifesto, it disappeared into the darkness, leaving only a trail of wild rose petals. • I followed the rose petals. They formed a path in the void. At the end of it, there was a mound of soil. A living, growing, wild rose was blooming from it. As I reached out to touch and examine it, a scythe blade swept out from the darkness and uprooted the flower. It dissolved instantly. • “do you believe in destiny?” Creekflow’s voice called out from the darkness. I didn’t know what to say. Before I could even answer, the blade swung out from the darkness again. I managed to block it with my own scythe. I could see Creekflow’s eyes gleaming through the void at me. Getting up onto my hooves, I managed to push its scythe away. I leapt out, thrusting the scythe towards Creekflow, but it parried it and knocked my blade to the floor. I then felt the cold steel of Creekflow’s scythe descend quickly against my neck. • “hush,” it said to me. I couldn’t maintain my composure, and I fell to the floor. The darkness began to dissipate and reveal the grass beneath my hooves. As I began to see more around me, I realized that I was now surrounded by an unfamiliar open field. It appeared as endless as the one outside of the cottage, but the grass was still growing and there were no corpses. Instead, it smelled of fresh water, roses, and hay. • The darkness faded completely. Scattered across the meadow were scythes, stuck firmly into the earth. The ringing in my ears finally began to also fade.
