Oltenia, Romania | Polovragi Monastery • Polovragi Monastery, nestled under the mountains and built like a fortress was founded in 1505. In 1645, the current church was built in Byzantine style, with the help of Ruler Prince Matei Basarab. The church is surrounded by cells, forming a strong defense fortress accessible through a massive gate above which rises the bel tower. The painting of the Byzantine tradition, executed in fresco, was made during the reign of Constantin Brancoveanu between 1698-1705 by the first painters from the Brancovan school in Hurez. The frescoes are highly valuable in terms of both iconography and technical execution. The iconostasis, made of linden wood and decorated with floral braids is a true masterpiece of the old Romanian sculpture. The Romanian Brancovan style porch is supported by eight stone columns and has a rare iconographic representation, depicting images of monasteries from Mount Athos. The monastic settlement of Polovragi has a picturesque location at the base of a mount where the grace descends between the rocks and the spiritual treasures and timeless beauties of the history of the nation are carefully preserved.
