The Selk’nam tribe is a formidable native group to have ever inhabited Tierra del Fuego archipelago, one of the most unforgiving and hostile regions, located at the southern tip of South America. They are the last indigenous tribes to have encountered European invaders. It is estimated that by the time Europeans first made contact in their attempt to conquer Tierra del Fuego the nomadic Selk’nam had been living there for thousands of years and numbered approximately 4,000. In 1919, there were more than 200 of the Selk’nam people remained on the island. This ill-fated tribe went from being the most prominent in Tierra del Fuego to being all but extinct, a little over 100 years later. The last full-blooded Selk’nam tribesperson died in 1974 and, by 1990, there were no longer any Ona-language speakers left in the world. The cultural heritage of the Selk’nam, had all but disappeared. The Selk’nam are considered extinct as a tribe. • Background Music: • Journey in the New World by Twin Musicom is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...) • Source: http://www.twinmusicom.org/song/258/j... • Artist: http://www.twinmusicom.org • Echoes of Time by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...) • Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-... • Artist: http://incompetech.com/ • Despair and Triumph by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...) • Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-... • Artist: http://incompetech.com/
