In this One Critical Minute we focus on the ECG changes in hypocalcemia! • • ECG changes in hypocalcemia are few and easy. The QT interval prolongs, primarily by the elongation of the ST segment. Also, aspecific T-wave changes occur, most commonly T-wave inversion. Note that these ECG changes correlate poorly with serum levels, but remember: though uncommon, the longer the QT interval, the greater risk of cardiac dysrhythmias. So keep your patient on the monitor while supplementing calcium if you see these changes. • • For more information on hypocalcemia, watch my video on it! • • Hypocalcemia - a short outline • Related videos: • ◆ Calcium Albumin [1CM]: • Correction of Calcium for Albumin - O... • ◆ Hyperkalemia: • Hyperkalemia - Quick workup treatment • ◆ Hypokalemia: • Hypokalemia - an easy workup • ◆ Hyponatremia: • Hyponatremia - a practical approach • • Get it touch! • Website ▸ http://www.crit-ic.com • Twitter ▸ / crit_ic • Facebook ▸ / critic.medicine • Instagram ▸ / crit.ic
