Falling leaves descend through the air like crimson specters as the howls and shrieks of the autumn winds grow shrill enough to wake the slumbering dead in their graves. And with each night, an eerie mist creeps from the forest to enshroud our village in a ghostly fog. • The Dark Harvest shall soon be upon us. • The scarecrows have been left in the fields. We dare not move them. They are naught but skeletal forms fashioned from straw and the bones of wild beasts, but they are bewitched. They watch silently and deathly still as the crows perch upon their outstretched arms. • But as night falls and the crescent moon rises to loom above the fields, the carrion birds stir from their roosts and take to flight. For it is said that the glow of the autumn moon imbues these sinister straw men with unearthly life. • None who have seen these living nightmares have survived to tell the tale, but the scarecrows can be heard shambling through the village streets in the dead of night, searching for anyone foolish enough to disobey the Elder’s curfew. • When the dawn breaks, we find them returned to their posts in the fields—their black eyes lifeless once more, their ragged lips now coated in dried blood. • During these haunted October nights, when the veil between the realms of the living and the dead grows thin, restless spirits walk among us. The most feared of all is the Harvest King, for his touch is said to wither a man to dust. This immortal creature possesses the power to bless or curse the crops and yields of the coming year. He is both Deliverer of Salvation and Harbinger of Death. We honor him with an ancient ritual each Hallows Eve and offer sacrifices to appease his sinister hungers. • This is the Dark Harvest. • The bonfires have been lit. The skulls and bones of ancestors have been etched with ancient runes and placed around the ritual pyres. Drums pound as masked revelers sway and chant invocations to the forest lords and ravenous spirits of the dead. • Tonight the Harvest King shall come, and I shall await him upon the sacrificial altar. • For I have been chosen.
