A short teaser of our visit to the Rio Tinto and it's mine. The Rio Tinto mine was once the largest copper mine of the world and started the similar named mining company in 1873. • Due to the natural deposits of metals and minerals the river turned very acidic (pH 2) and carries many heavy metals. The mining of these mineral rich lands for 5000 years, and especially the industrialized mining operation between 1873 and 2001 acted as a catalyst causing acid mine drainaige. • While environmental concerns are very present, plans exist to reopen the mine to fuel the rising demand for copper. While the opening has been delayed, on the 17th April 2015 the earth shook in Rio Tinto for the first time in 14 years as 6.500 tonne of explosive were used to remove 28.000 tonne of sterile rock, in preparation for renewed mining operation. While an ecological disaster, it's a welcoming idea to the 5000 inhabitants of the nearby village, that has an astronomical unemployment rate of 50%. Also, copper doesn't grow on trees, and the rising the demand for EV's, batteries, electronics and so on makes it a though choice between economics and preserving the environment. • While the river is super acidic and full of heavy metals, some lifeforms are thriving there, various bacteria and even algae live in the murky waters of the Rio Tinto, drawing the attention of astrobiologists. They study how life can exists in such waters, since water on Mars and Jupiter's Moon Europa may have or had similar conditions. • #shorts
