In this video, we’ll be talking about how to invest your EPF money into other mutual funds and whether you should do it. • Want to invest in mutual funds with Fund Supermart? Use this link to help us make more videos like this: • https://themillennialfinance.com/fund... • EPF recently announced 5.2% dividends on their conventional investments, and 4.9% for Syariah for 2020. This is actually better than expected and their conventional division outperformed ASB’s 5%. • The fund actually recorded their highest ever net income from investments last year, reaching over RM60b. • All this while though, EPF has allowed their investors - which covers nearly all Malaysians to “take out” a portion of their holdings to invest in other mutual funds. • In 2019, EPF launched the i-Invest platform that enables unit holders to do this completely online. This is a major move and it opens up the potential of using your EPF funds to invest elsewhere. • As Malaysians, we’re actually pretty lucky to have the equivalent of EPF as our pension fund. This is because is a fixed NAV fund similar to ASB, meaning you can’t lose money investing in EPF. • As if this wasn’t enough, they’re guaranteeing a 2.5% annual dividend to all conventional shareholders. Usually, if a fund guarantees something like this we’d think its a scam, but this is an exception. • So should we even attempt to outperform EPF’s returns by investing our money elsewhere? • In the last 10 years, EPF averaged an annual return of 6.11% which is pretty much the standard you can expect from a fund. • This means that if you’re investing your EPF money into another mutual fund, you better hope they outperform this to make things worth it. When you factor in the risk portion, I’d say that it’ll only be worth it if they can do it by at least 2-3% annually. • Personally, I do have a small portion of my EPF holdings in other mutual funds because I believe that the assets they’re holding do have a potential of outperforming. More on that in the video. • So if you don’t really understand how these funds work or don’t know how to go through a fund factsheet at least, I’d say stay away from this. • If you’re looking to diversify your investments a bit like me, then to be eligible you must: • 1. Be younger than 55 y/o • 2. Have a minimum amount in your EPF account • 3. Be a Malaysian citizen or PR • Watch the video to find out how to calculate the minimum amount required. • Once you know how much you’re able to invest, its time to decide which fund you want to invest in. • We won’t go into that much detail on which funds you should go for, but we’d highly recommend against going for fixed income or bond funds. These usually return 2-3% a year so there’s really no point going for it when EPF pays 5-6%. • Watch the video to see an real example of buying funds. • Usually we'll buy our funds via iFast Capital (aka Fund Supermart) because we can consolidate all of our funds and also invest in other funds separate from EPF on this platform. • EPF has negotiated for all funds to provide 0% sales charges until April 30th this year, so if you’re considering doing this its probably a good time to do it before then. • What about i-Sinar withdrawals? • i-Sinar allows you to withdraw from EPF with no conditions. People who having less than RM100k in EPF allowed to withdraw up to RM10k, while those with more than that being able to withdraw 10% of their holdings up to RM60k. This will be deposited into your bank account over 6 months, for you to use however you like. • So should you do it? • Timestamps: • 00:00 - Intro • 0:16 - EPF 2020 returns and performance • 0:56 - Does EPF allow you to withdraw money and invest elsewhere? • 3:05 - Why EPF is a great investment for Malaysians • 4:10 - Does EPF guarantee investment returns? • 4:34 - Should we attempt to outperform EPF? • 5:29 - Who should withdraw from EPF to invest elsewhere?
