Why has the US passed a bill to ban TikTok, and what’s next? • Sinya: Good afternoon everyone, I'm Sinya. • Ivy: I'm Ivy. • Cynthia: And I'm Cynthia. We're all from H1C. • Ivy: Hey, what have you guys been up to? • Cynthia: Quite good. • Sinya: I've been following the hottest trend on TikTok! The dance I'm practicing right now is really popular. • Ivy: Oh, I've seen the dance before. A lot of influencers have kept up with that trend of dancing and successfully grabbed many fans. • Sinya: Exactly. Sooooo, don't you wanna come and join me? • Ivy: Not me. • Cynthia: Nah, don't count me in. I'm really not a fan of Tik Tok. • Sinya: Okay…Wait, what? How come? • Cynthia: I'm just feeling quite insecure about how TikTok gets my personal information so rapidly. • Ivy: Yeah, so do I, but I'm kinda on the fence about this topic. • Sinya: About this topic…by the way, have y'all heard about the bill? • Cynthia: You mean the bill America has passed about banning TikTok? • Ivy: Definitely, it's a pretty controversial move, isn't it? • Sinya: Yeah, I think the bill is insane. How could a government restrict our freedom of creation! • Cynthia: Wait, really? I actually think it's a good idea. • Sinya: How so? • Cynthia : It's said that Tiktok has guaranteed their content won't be manipulated by the Chinese government. I don't believe it though. • Ivy: True. I guess the US authorities did this out of the safety concern, but it'll definitely impact a lot of Tiktok users. • Cynthia: You can say that again. The US authorities contended that TikTok collects an excess of personal data. • Ivy: Yeah, they also suspected that TikTok could be abused by the Chinese government to spy on the users. • Sinya: That’s possible. But if the bill passed, how could I… how could some influencers interact with their adorable fans. Especially some popular Tiktokers. • Cynthia: Ugh, please give me a break. • Sinya: I mean, I'm serious! Many tiktokers do this for a living. What could they do without TikTok? • Ivy: They're gonna be overwhelmed. TikTok is definitely their life's work. • Cynthia: Absolutely. • Ivy: Yeah, many of them are getting really mad and have even staged some protests. • Sinya: One of my online-friends just joined a protest last week. We were doing face-time at that time and the scene was spectacular. • Ivy: A lot of people gathered in front of the WhiteHouse and chanted many impressive slogans. • Cynthia: Just like “Keep TikTok ”or “TikTok changed my life for the better.” • Sinya: And some of them were speaking out about TikTok’s financial and communal benefits. • Ivy: To be honest, I'm pretty curious why the government didn't take some gentle action. • Sinya: Well, I actually think banning TikTok isn't the right solution. • Cynthia: Agreed, it's kinda extreme, not gonna lie. • Ivy: This issue is still under hot debate in America because the views are getting kinda polarized. • Cynthia: Yeah, tiktok is still facing challenges from different perspectives of ban.
