What is Angioplasty? • Angioplasty, also called Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), is a procedure used to open blocked coronary arteries caused by coronary artery disease. Coronary arteries supply oxygenated blood to the heart muscle • Procedure (Radial Access) • A needle is inserted into the Radial artery • A flexible guide wire is inserted through the needle • The needle is removed and a sheath is inserted • The guide wire is advanced up to the heart • A long, thin tube (Catheter) is put into a blood vessel and advanced over the guide wire to the blocked coronary artery • Once the catheter is in place, a tiny balloon at its tip is inflated at the narrowed area of the coronary artery • This presses the plaque or blood clot against the sides of the artery, making more room for blood flow • Balloon is deflated and removed • Stent may be put into the newly opened area of the artery to help keep the artery from narrowing again • The procedure may also be performed by Femoral Access where a needle is inserted into the femoral artery • Post- Treatment Care • Keep the insertion site clean and dry • Avoid strenuous activities • Avoid heavy lifting • Take medicines as prescribed • Speak to your doctor for more Information on Coronary Angioplasty • Time Stamps • 0:00 Introduction to Angioplasty • 0:21 Procedure (Radial Access) • 1:20 Post- Treatment Care
