Biting Bird Mites Under the Microscope Ornithonyssus sp

Ornithonyssus (Fowl/Bird mites) are commonly found on and feed on birds. In areas of high nesting, such as areas of older buildings with ample cavity opportunities for House Sparrows and Starlings, bird mites will occasionally enter homes and manifest humans. However, the bites are generally of minor discomfort and as a general rule, Ornithonyssus sp. cannot survive completely off of humans. The bites themselves however, can cause severe itching and reactions, which can lead to dermatitis and possibility papular urticaria. Generally, populations subside in human habitations a few weeks after the peak of the nesting season. These individuals were collected from Boston on a piece of translucent tape at a location which had large numbers of nesting House Sparrows (Passer domesticus). The species is most likely Ornithonyssus sylviarum.
