Desert kangaroo rat out during the day

This clip shows a rare view of a desert kangaroo rat that is willing to explore a bit outside her burrow at sunset. The kangaroo rat is a marked female in our study population (she has an eartag and dye mark so we can identify her). She is quite bold, and will often poke around the entrance to her burrow at sunset, while it is still light out. Since most of our photos and videos are taken under IR light at night, this female gives us the rare opportunity to actually see one of these animals up close in full color. • Scientific details of our kangaroo rat research are published at doi numbers 10.1111/eth.12869; 10.1016/j.anbehav.2017.06.004; 10.1093/biolinnean/blz027; 10.1093/biolinnean/blx09; 110.1093/jmammal/gyw137; 10.1016/j.zool.2016.02.005) • • Find more information at http://www.ninjarat.org, and email us with any questions at [email protected].
