Lecture-5 : Basic Rotary Kiln different Heating zone of Pyroprocessing system by Dr K Mohan. • Dr K Mohan is an internationally renowned and an acclaimed cement scientist. He is a former Director General of National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCCBM). • He holds a Ph.D. degree in Cement Chemistry from University of Aberdeen, Scotland, U.K. • • Rotary kiln is a long cylindrical - shaped pipe, of about 85 – 90 m long and about 5 – 6 m diameter. • • It is inclined a few degrees from the horizontal and is rotated about its axis at a speed of about 3 - 4 r.p.m. Its internal surface is lined by refractory bricks. • • In the preheater / precalciner system the kiln feed is preheated and precalcined outside the rotary kiln i.e., before it enters the rotary kiln. In the preheater system the kiln feed is preheated and partly calcined by the hot kiln exit gases in a tower of heat exchange cyclones. Precalciners are attached to the lower stage of the preheater tower and equipped with auxilliary firing. In precalciner kilns 95 – 97 % calcination takes place outside the kiln. • • Low grade cheaper fuels can be fired in precaciner. • Different Zones in Cement Rotary Kiln with Preheater / Precalciner • 1. Drying Zone 20 -200oC • 2. Preheater Zone 260 - 750oC • 3. Calcining Zone 750 - 900oC • 4. Upper Transition Zone 900 - 1200oC • 5. Sintering / Burning Zone 1200 - 1450oC • 6. Lower Transition Zone / Discharge Zone 1450 - 1200oC • 7. Quenching Zone 1200 - 800oC • 8. Cooling Zone 800 - 120oC • #Rotarykiln #Pyroprocessing #Preheater #Heatzone #Kiln #cementplant #Cement #Cementchemistry
