Rudolph J. Plocar was born in Chicago on December 6, 1916, to John and Anna (Rabschutz) Plocar. Based in Manitowoc, WI, Plocar was a multi-instrumentalist, playing clarinet, saxophones, and trumpet. At the beginning of 1936, Plocar joined the band of the “Polka King,” Romy Gosz, recording with the band and contributing to some Czech-language vocals. In June of that year, the Gosz band played at Plocar's wedding to Stella Holeman. • In 1939 Plocar joined the band of accordion-playing Lawrence Duchow, the Red Raven Orchestra, based in Appleton, WI. During that same year Plocar recorded with the Ravens for the Decca label. Plocar led his own band from early 1941 until he enlisted in the Army in late 1942. Upon his discharge in 1945, he reassembled a band and was soon doing a half-hour show on the local radio station, taking gigs in Sheboygan and recording for Rondo. His band, the “All Veterans Orchestra” accounted for the first 10 releases in Rondo’s 550 series. • Plocar’s band at the time featured Wilfred (“Butch”) Doleysh on first trumpet; Rudy Plocar on second trumpet, clarinet, and tenor sax; Norm Skornicka on clarinet and alto sax; Wenzel (“Jim”) Doleysh on clarinet and alto sax; Howard Fisher at the piano; Russell Rank alternating between string bass and sousaphone; and Jim Schneider at the drums. Butch and Jim, along with their trumpet-playing brother Clarence (“Chubby”) formed the Doleysh Brothers Orchestra, which was advertising shows as early as mid-1954, the same year they recorded a single for Polkaland. • In 1948 Plocar purchased the Shoto Gardens tavern on the edge of Manitowoc. He recorded for the Mercury label for a couple of years before returning to Rondo, then moving on to Polkaland. His band performed through the 1950s until an auto accident in 1959 left him with disabling injuries. After a few years’ silence he resumed limited activity in the late 1960s. In August 1970, his second wife Joni died at the age of 41, and Rudy himself passed away on May 17, 1972. He was buried in Manitowoc. • [adapted with permission from an excellent account of the Rondo label by Robert L.
