For #BlackHistoryMonth, Valerie Gray-Holmes, who has portrayed Lydia for Colonial Williamsburg in the past, tells the story of Lydia Broadnax – an American free Black woman, former enslaved person, and businesswoman. • • After over 45 years of enslavement, Lydia was freed by her enslaver George Wythe and eventually purchased a house and property that she may have used as a boarding house. When George Wythe moved to Richmond, Lydia still worked for the Wythe household as a paid cook and housekeeper. Although sources state that she was an eyewitness to the poisoning of George Wythe, as well as having been poisoned herself, Lydia was forbidden to testify against the perpetrator because of her race. In a handwritten letter to President Thomas Jefferson on April 9, 1807, Lydia implies that the poisoning affected her eyesight and asks for financial assistance, which he ends up granting. • The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 educational institution and the largest U.S. history museum in the world.
