There are a few things you can do to help organize your back in a way that allows your skeleton to support you more easily. Here are a few tips: • • 1. Try to maintain an arch in your lower back. • 2. Relax your stomach and your abdominal muscles. When your stomach and abdominal muscles are habitually contracted, your back muscles cannot work effectively. • 3. As you breathe, allow your lower abdomen to expand when you inhale. • 4. Sitting can cause back problems, or make them worse. You can protect your back by: • ~ Sitting on the forward edge of your chair, with your stomach relaxed, and both feet resting on the floor. (This will allow your back to arch!) • ~ Putting a firm pillow or rolled-up-towel behind your lower back, to support the arch in your lower back. • 5. When driving, put a firm pillow or rolled up towel behind your lower back, to support its arch. • 6. Reduce the amount of time you spend on a sofa, because it may not provide you with sufficient postural support. • 8. Avoid doing things that compress or round your back. • 9. Wear shoes that provide sufficient cushion, shock absorption and support. • 10. Ideally, when you are standing, your weight should be over your heels, not forward toward your toes. • 11. If you have back pain, don't ignore it. As soon as you can, lie down and do a Feldenkrais lesson. • • As we learned in last week’s Pain-Free Back class, the amount of support you might need for maintaining the arch in your lower back may vary. Go with the amount that feels truly comfortable. • In this week’s lesson, we will continue learning how to alleviate back pain and stimulate your built-in healing processes to avoid back problems in the future. • David Zemach-Bersin • • To join us visit: www.feldenkraisaccess.com/pain-free-back • • #feldenkraisaccess #feldenkrais #feldenkraisonline #selfcare #feldenkraisworkshop #onlineworkshop #selfhelp #healyourself #awarenessthroughmovement #atmfeldenkrais #backpain #backcare #backpainrelief #reducebackpain #neuroplasticity #short
