UPDATE edited 09/29/2016: Component cable has 5 RCA plugs: Red Blue Green for video, White Red for audio. If your cable has 3 RCA plugs Yellow White and Red , that's a Composite , not a Component and doesn't support HD mode. It will turn blank if you increase the resolution even if you are using an HDTV. Here's the picture of a component cable: https://www.google.com/search?q=ps3+c... • If you don't see anything from the very beginning, hold down the power button for about 5 seconds so that the PS3 will revert from HDMI mode to AV mode. You can also do this same trick if you mess up the settings and the picture turns blank. • The component cable can display up to 1080p. This guide is for those who have an older HDTV that doesn't have HDMI input (an HDTV that had been purchased during the PS2 era). HDTV with HDMI input also supports component in HD which is important for those who don't have HDMI cable so they can use their existing PS2 component cable with PS3. Most CRT TV with component input doesn't support HD except with high-end models. • Note: The component is analog which can be affected by several factors including cable capacitance and the circuit of the TV itself. The quality varies from TV to TV. HDMI is digital which is not affected by those anomalies inherent in analog therefore HDMI is better.
