The VDRL test checks for antibodies against syphilis. This test doesn't find syphilis-causing bacteria. It looks for antibodies against chemicals released by bacteria-damaged cells. • It detects active syphilis and monitors the treatment response. Non-reactive RPR tests may indicate no current infection or a cured infection. False-positive RPRs can occur in tuberculosis, malaria, and viral pneumonia. A positive RPR indicates prior or present syphilis infection.
