Heat sinks play an important role in circuit design, providing an efficient path for heat to be transferred into the ambient air and away from electronic devices. Without them, many electronics such as BJTs, MOSFETs, linear regulators, BGA packages, and so on are more likely to overheat, causing damage or complete component failure. To further understand a heat sink’s importance, this video walks through a simple thermal calculation example that can be used to determine if a heat sink is needed, and if so, how to properly specify a heat sink based on your system requirements. • Read more in our How to Select a Heat Sink blog: https://www.sameskydevices.com/blog/h... • Click here for more tutorials on heat sinks and thermal management: https://www.sameskydevices.com/blog/t... • 0:00 What is a Heat Sink? • 0:33 Is a Heat Sink Required? • 1:12 What is Thermal Impedance? • 2:02 Heat Sink Calculation Example • 3:13 Calculating the Thermal Impedance Paths • 4:19 Final Heat Sink Calculations • 5:07 The Importance of Heat Sinks • If you want to learn more about Audio, Interconnect, Motion Control, Sensors, Switches, or Thermal Management design, SUBSCRIBE to the Same Sky (formerly CUI Devices) channel! • Connect with Same Sky: • LinkedIn ➤ / same-sky-devices • Facebook ➤ / sameskydevices • Twitter ➤ / sameskydevices • Instagram ➤ / sameskydevices
