The manifestations of congenital rubella syndrome can be categorized as early or late-onset. The characteristic triad of congenital rubella syndrome includes hearing impairment, cardiac defects (e.g., peripheral pulmonary stenosis), and ocular defects (e.g., congenital cataracts). Visual and auditory defects are also seen in congenital cytomegalovirus infection, however heart defects are not. • Some other early-onset manifestations of congenital rubella syndrome include hematologic disorders (such as extramedullary hematopoiesis), hepatic disorders (such as hepatitis), growth disturbances (such as microcephaly and fetal growth restriction. Now, a few late-onset manifestations include further hearing loss, intellectual disability, diabetes mellitus, thyroid dysfunction, and progressive panencephalitis. • #FOAMped #MedEd #pediatrics • Disclaimer: All the information provided by Medical Education for Visual Learners and associated videos are strictly for informational purposes only.
