An allele is a variant form of a gene, which is a specific segment of DNA that encodes a particular trait or characteristic in an organism. Genes come in pairs, with one allele inherited from each parent. Alleles can exist in different forms, leading to variations in traits such as eye color, height, or blood type. • For any given gene, an individual can have two identical alleles, in which case they are homozygous for that gene. Alternatively, an individual can have two different alleles, in which case they are heterozygous. The combination of alleles an individual carries determines their genotype, and it influences their phenotype, which is the observable expression of the genetic traits. • Alleles can be dominant or recessive. A dominant allele is one that masks the effect of the recessive allele when they are present together in a heterozygous individual. In contrast, a recessive allele is only expressed phenotypically if the individual is homozygous recessive for that trait. • #biology • #biologyworld • #biologylecture • #biologyeducation
