What did the Ancient Greek Lyres sound like? This video demonstrates the sound of both the recreated kithara of classical Greece and also the ancient Greek chelys (tortoise shell form) lyre. • The video begins with a 'live' performance on replica kithara, of Asteriai (Nymphs of the Stars) - track 5 from my 2015 album, The Lyre of Hermes : • http://www.ancientlyre.com/ancient_gr... • This album is the sequel to my album, The Lyre of Apollo - The Chelys Lyre of Ancient Greece . Both of these albums are part of an exciting collaboration between myself and Lutherios Ancient Modern Music Instruments for their inspirational Lyre 2.0 Project - dedicated to reintroducing the beautiful lyre of antiquity back into our much aesthetically poorer, bland modern world. Their vision is one I share and which continues to inspire me - maybe, someday soon, the beautiful lyre of antiquity will once again resonate the 21st century and beyond, with its haunting, ancient beauty. • The Luthieros model of the kithara of classical antiquity, (used in the 'live' portion of this video presentation) also features the hypothetically recreated 2500 year old vibrato mechanism, of which there is certainly considerable visual evidence to support this theory: • http://www.ancientlyre.com/the_kithar... • The recreated lyre performed in the clip from the recording towards the end of the video featured on my album The Lyre of Hermes - this was a tortoise shell form (chelys) lyre; the lyre which in ancient Greek mythology, was first created by Hermes,as described in the Homeric Hymn to Hermes: • http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/t... • The chelys I am playing in the recording has the resonator fashioned out of wood in the general form of the tortoise shell, for a richer, more resonant tone. This practice is also documented in classical texts: • All the wood required for the lyre is of boxwood, firm and free from knots – there is no ivory anywhere about the lyre, for men did not yet know wither the elephant or the use they were to make of its tusks. The tortoise-shell is black, but its portrayal is accurate and true to nature in that the surface is covered with irregular circles which touch each other and have yellow eyes • (Philostratus the Elder, Imagines , 1.10: http://www.theoi.com/Text/Philostratu...) • Subscribe Here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c... • http://www.ancientlyre.com/ •   / beautifullyre   •   / ancientlyre   • http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/MichaelLevy • https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/mi...
