The #Nobel Prize in Physics 1930 was awarded to Sir #Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman for his work on the scattering of light and for the discovery of the effect named after him. • This all started with a very simple question about the physics of the blue colour of seawater. • During a voyage home from England on board the S.S. Narkunda in September 1921, he asked himslef why the sea appears to be blue in colour. There were several hypotheses available on the colour of the sea. • The best explanation was from Lord Rayleigh (in 1910), according to which The much admired dark blue of the deep sea has nothing to do with the colour of water, but is simply the blue of the sky seen by reflection . • Rayleigh was the person who explained beautifully the nature of the blue sky by a phenomenon now known as Rayleigh scattering. • But somewhere Raman was no convinced with this ad hoc explanation • Listen to know what happened by #ManishPurohit.
