There is a phantom dog that haunts Maryland’s South Mountain. Its range extends into the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia and it has been spotted at far south as Loudoun County, Virginia. • The dog is large, jet black in color with a fierce red mouth; it has large paws and glowing eyes. This dog-like apparition is known as the Snarly Yow, named after a legend that originated in Wales centuries ago. Ghostly black dogs, as well as mysterious black cats, appear quite often in the folklore of the British Isles—sightings there are still being reported in our present day. • During the early-1900s, many people in the tri-state area reported seeing a massive black dog with a red mouth. The beast often confronted travelers and quickly disappeared. Curiously, the creature never harmed anyone; it did, however, put a scare into anyone who saw it. • Travelers frightened by the creature tried their best to kill it. Their efforts failed—bullets passed through its body without causing harm or drawing blood... • For this story and more, read Wild Wonderful (and Paranormal) West Virginia by Denver Michaels. • https://amzn.to/2w4mXsE
