Although much of this vertical movement occurs along plate margins and is associated with active mountain building, some of it is not. • Evidence for crustal uplift occurs along the west coast of the United States. When the elevation of a coastal area remains unchanged for an extended period, a wave-cut platform develops. In parts of California, ancient wave-cut platforms can now be found as terraces hundreds of meters above sea level. Such evidence of crustal uplift is easy to find.
