Dandelions have a strong gravitrophic (aka geotrophic) response. If the stems are detached from the plant and held sideways for a period of time, they will reorient themselves by bending upwards until they return to a near vertical position. While this reorientation can be measured over time (see practical link below), this process can be captured beautifully using free stop-motion / time-lapse apps available for mobile phones. • 0:00 Introduction from Jon Haines, Newcastle University • 0:30 Preparing the dandelion sample • 1:42 Setting up Frameographer to observe gravitopism • 2:18 Credits • Choose dandelions that are in bud or ones which have lost their flowers and are about to form their seed heads. These are more strongly negatively gravitropic. Ones with flowers open or with dandelion clocks are not so responsive. When dandelions are out of season, white deadnettles (Lamium album) can be used as an alternative. • Visit our website for teacher and technician notes for this practical: https://www.saps.org.uk/teaching-reso... • Follow our channel for biology practicals and more. • #saps #scienceexperiment #dandelions
