Terrestrial magnetism: Origin of the Earth's magnetic field • In this video, we will explain to you why the earth behaves like a gigantic magnet and why the magnetic north pole moves. • The earth consists of several layers: the earth's crust, mantle and core. The earth's core is made up of 2 elements: a hard inner core called a seed. Around this core there is a liquid outer core composed mainly of iron (Fe). The inner core is a solid sphere bathed in liquid iron. Heat flows from the center of the earth set this liquid in motion. When heat escapes from the center of the earth, it causes the iron to move, which then begins to swirl. The material then moves by forming vortices. These are the convection currents. Convection currents create electrical currents. The electric current flowing through iron in its liquid state generates a magnetic field. So our planet behaves like a magnet. • The North Pole of the compass is attracted to the Earth's magnetic South Pole.
