Our first Luna Moth ecloses! • I have always been interested in Lepidoptera which is the order of insects that includes butterflies and moths. But recently my son's reared Painted Lady Butterflies in school and of course, the described the entire experience to me. This kind of sparked my interest even further and it did get me to thinking about raising a batch of butterflies for myself. Well, in doing my research I took more of an interest in moths since I found out that some moths, the giant silk moths are just as beautiful as butterflies. Doing some research on silk moths in my area, a very pretty moth called the 'Luna Moth' is supposedly in my area. But living here all my life, I never seen one on Long Island. This could be attributed to the short time frame they live. Adult moths do not have mouths and thus they cannot eat. They spend their life, which is usually a very short 5 to 10 days long, trying to find a mate. Thus the Luna moth piqued my interest. I found a fellow that sells moth cocoons in Staten Island and I bought four Luna Moth cocoons from him. I build a tall and sturdy cage in which I laid the cocoons on the bottom. On August 29th 2016, my first Luna hatched while I was away at work. Luckily my wife and kids were home and my wife took this video for me. So, sadly I didn''t get to see this in person, although they did. The moth hatched about mid afternoon about 5 minutes after I called my wife to check on the moth's progress. Needless to say, when my shift was over, I rushed home from work to finally come face to face with this beautiful creature. By then it's wings were fully inflated and open. But it was still drying. I quickly identified its sex to be a male. At about 9:15pm we opened the cage and let it out so it could stretch it's wings...and fly it did! (see link below). It flew in my office and in the bathroom and there we all took turns letting it crawl on our finger. When it was on my finger, the moth 'shuddered'. From my reading, I know they do this when they are about to fly. The feeling of the shuddering moth on my finger was weird. It did the same thing on my son's finger before finally taking off and flying around the bathroom. But after a while the moth got tired and started to hit the wall and fall down. So we called it night. It was a nice experience for the whole family. I still have three more cocoons and hopefully another one will hatch tomorrow. So sit back and enjoy this video of our first newly emerging Luna Moth. • Here are other video links associated with this Luna Moth. • Wings inflating: • • Video • First Luna's First Flight! • • Video • Enjoy!
