In this clinical tip, Christine A. Padesky, PhD, teaches therapists a simple Anxiety Equation (Mooney, 1986) that explains what causes anxiety disorders and why they persist. Using a clinical case example (driving phobia), she illustrates how overestimations of danger and underestimations of coping and resources contribute to and maintain anxiety disorders. Padesky also highlights the frightening nature of anxious imagery. She points out that anxiety treatments can target either danger beliefs or beliefs about coping and resources. • This is the first of two related videos on the Anxiety Equation. The second video teaches which anxiety disorders benefit most from testing danger beliefs and which benefit most from increasing confidence in coping. • For more Clinical Tips, see our YouTube Clinical Tips playlist • https://bit.ly/3hn6LrF • [see Timestamps at end of this section] • ************* • REFERENCES (please note, we use bit.ly links when the web address is lengthy) • ************* • 1) For deeper understanding of anxiety disorders and their treatments, read Chapters 10 and 11 of: “The Clinician's Guide to CBT Using Mind Over Mood, 2nd Edition” (2020).
