The road was built in the years 1970–1974 at the request of Nicolae Ceaușescu, in the place of existing forest paths and mountain trails. It is about 151 km long and connects Wallachia with Transylvania (Transylvania). The most spectacular and spectacular part of the route is on its northern section. In the southern part there are, among others: a dam on the Arges River, 160 meters high, forming the Vidraru Lake and the Poenari Castle, belonging to Vlad the Impaler (the prototype of Dracula). There are 27 viaducts, 830 bridges and several smaller tunnels on the route. There are several hotels and hostels along the road. The highest part of the road (2042 m a.s.l.) is also the longest tunnel in Romania (884 m long), crossing the ridge of the Fagar Mountains in the Southern Carpathians.
