A coronal hole on the Sun rotates toward Earth over the course of 48 hours, ending on Nov. 1, 2015. The imagery was acquired by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft. • The coronal hole is that dark region along the Sun's midsection. It's an area where magnetic field lines are open, allowing a concentrated, high-speed stream of solar wind particles to spray out into space. • As of Oct. 30, 2015, the Sun's rotation focused that spray toward us. The result: The Space Weather Prediction Center issued a strong • geomagnetic storm watch for November 2 (UTC day), and a moderate watch for November 3. • Geomagnetic storms can produce beautiful displays of the aurora borealis. But they can also disrupt satellites and navigation systems, and also cause problems for power grids. For more information about these storms, go here: http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/phenomena/ge...
