Vaquita porpoise in Mexico is marine mammal on the brink of extinction. They only live in the Upper Gulf of California, Mexico. As of February 2017, the population estimate is now 30 animals. • Gillnets - nearly invisible fishing nets set for shrimp - are the primary cause of their mortality. Now, illegal gillnet fishing targeting Totoaba fish and their bladders for sale in China has increased the population decline. • I filmed this story over 5 years interviewing marine scientists, conservationists, fishermen and their families in the local communities in Mexico whose lives are dependent on the sea. I spent two months on an international scientific expedition in Mexico searching for the elusive vaquita. And, I visited with researchers at WWF Mexico to learn more about a potential solution that may bring these animals back from the edge. However, time is running out. • Twitter: / earthocean
