Stephen Ray Perry (born January 22nd, 1949) is an American singer and songwriter. He was the lead singer and front man of the rock band Journey during their most successful years from 1977 to 1987, and again from 1995 to 1998. He also wrote/co-wrote several Journey hit songs. Perry had a successful solo career between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s, made sporadic appearances in the 2000s, and returned to music full-time in 2018. • At age 12, Perry heard Sam Cooke's song Cupid on his mother's car radio, and it inspired him to become a singer. In Banta, California, outside of Tracy, California, Perry fronted the band Alien Project in his mid-20s. He nearly gave up music when the bassist of that band, Richard Michaels, was killed in an automobile accident. Perry returned to Lemoore and decided not to continue his singing career, but at the urging of his mother, he answered a call from Walter Herbie Herbert, manager of struggling San Francisco-based band Journey. • Perry's singing voice has garnered acclaim from prominent musical peers and publications; he has been dubbed The Voice, a moniker originally coined by Jon Bon Jovi. Ranked No. 76 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Singers of All Time , Perry was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Journey on April 7th, 2017. He is renowned for his countertenor vocal range, which spans from F♯2 to A5. Queen guitarist Brian May said: Perry is a truly luminous singer, in my opinion, a voice in a million. • In the 1980s Perry dated Sherrie Swafford, for whom he wrote the 1984 song Oh Sherrie . From 'Street Talk', his first solo studio album, released in April 1984. • This song was Perry's biggest hit as a solo artist and his then-girlfriend Sherrie, also appeared in the music video. The song hit number three on the pop chart and number one on the rock chart in the United States, partly aided in its success by a music video released to promote the song, which received heavy airplay on MTV. It is often regarded as an honorary Journey song, being credited to the band on several hit compilation albums and in other media, largely due to its resemblance to the band's trademark sound, as well as their performances of the song on the Raised on Radio Tour, which proved to be Perry's live swansong with the band. • Sherri's story here; • • The Untold Story of Oh Sherrie by S... • Reminds me of The Knack's 'My Sharona' and Sharona Alperin. • On this day; 1967 - The Beatles announced that they would handle their own affairs following the death of manager Brian Epstein. • 1976 - A judge ruled that George Harrison was guilty of copying from the song He’s So Fine (by the Chiffons).
