One of my favorite tunes from the Ace Attorney trilogy is 'The Fragrance of Dark Coffee,' a.k.a. Godot's theme. The theme fits Godot so well: sometimes it can sound humorous and represent his wit and courtroom antics, but it's also quite melancholic and symbolic of his unfortunate past. • For this piece I attached the mute that came with my 1940 top-tension PB-7 conversion banjo. This is a rare metal mute with a cork on the underside that you press against the bridge for it to dampen the banjo's vibrations. It was specifically made with and for these Gibson top-tension models from the late 30s and early 40s. When I got this banjo and was told that it comes with its mute, I didn't understand that it was still usable. • Until just last week…I was attending Banjo Summit online (this is a great camp for banjo players, if you haven’t heard of it, please check it out). It is run by Jake Schepps (an extraordinary musician and top-tension geek), and in the office hours of the camp, Jake encouraged me to pull out this mute so everyone could have a look at it, and via Zoom, he determined I had all the parts necessary to attach it. With a bit of guidance from Jake, I was able to put it on my banjo successfully, and I played it for everyone right away. • I thought that it would create a great aesthetic effect specifically for my arrangement of The Fragrance of Dark Coffee. I am certainly planning on experimenting with this mute more in the future. • Max Allard - banjo • Otto Allard - mandocello • Engineered and edited by Otto Allard • Art by Otto Allard • --- • Check out Banjo Summit here: • https://banjosummit.org • And find Otto's YouTube channel here: • / @ottoallard • Find more from me here: • http://maxallard.com • Find early access to my videos, in addition to exclusive audio, videos, tabs, video tutorials and more from me on Patreon: • / maxallard
