The Catholic Evangelical Counsels

When a person enters into the religious life (consecrated life) they take three vows we call the evangelical counsels. • The evangelical counsels are: • 1) Chastity • 2) Poverty • 3) Obedience • These counsels are freely chosen ways of life modeled by the disciples of Jesus Christ. Each counsel is a commitment to turn away from the temptations of this life and become wholly devoted to God. In the consecrated life these vows are made publicly to the Church, and therefore, are binding as a permanent state of life. • Let’s look at each one more closely: • Chastity is a vow to remain celibate. • Poverty is a vow to to live a simple life owning no private possessions. • Obedience is a vow to become devoted to God’s will and submission to the authority of Church leaders (pope bishops) and of a religious order. • It is important to note that a diocesan priest takes vows of chastity and obedience, but not poverty. A priest in a religious order, however, does make a vow of poverty in their dedication to consecrated life. • SUBSCRIBE for more Catholic videos: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c... • CONNECT WITH THE RELIGION TEACHER: • -- Facebook:   / thereligionteacher   • -- Twitter:   / religionteacher   • -- Pinterest:   / religionteacher   • CONNECT WITH JARED: • -- Instagram:   / jareddees   • -- Twitter:   / jareddees   • -- LinkedIn:   / jareddees   • ARE YOU A RELIGIOUS EDUCATOR?
