The Mummies of Guanajuato are naturally mummified bodies interred around Guanajuato, Mexico. They are currently on display at the El Museo de Las Momias - The Museum of the Mummies. Learn about the history of this unique tourist attraction, how to get there, and some useful Spanish phrases for your trip. • Over 108 human bodies were disinterred between 1870 and 1958 mostly from the Panteón Santa Paula (St. Paula Cemetery). It was during that time there was a tax in place requiring a fee to be paid for perpetual burial. Some bodies for which the tax was not paid were disinterred, and some were stored in a nearby building. It was there where some of the cemetery workers began charging people to enter the building to see where bones and mummies were stored. • The bodies were stored at that first building until family members or friends came to claim the bodies. The unclaimed bodies are now part of the museum. • The climate of Guanajuato provides an environment which can lead to a type of natural mummification, along with the fact that the crypts were sealed airtight. However, scientific studies later revealed that some bodies had been at least partially embalmed. • #guanajuato #visitmexico #travelspanish
