Asthmatic Cat Breathing Heavy

My young cat Coco (approx. 1.5 years) has had asthma since she was only a few months old. She is breathing heavily (   • Asthmatic Cat Breathing Heavy  ) and her mucus builds up and results in wheezing attacks anywhere from 5-10 times a day (   • Cat Wheezing from Asthma Attack  ). You can hear her gurgling in the minutes before these attacks occur, and for up to a few hours afterwards (   • Cat Gurgling Noises Before and After ...  ). A sample of the fluid in her lungs was taken and tested and there were no infections. The doctors believe the excess mucus production is because of an allergen she is hyper-sensitive to, so I've done everything I can - dusting the house, different litter and food, using a humidifier... so far nothing has worked. She is currently being treated with Flovent and Levalbuterol inhalers with no success or improvement in her symptoms for over a year. • As a last resort, the vet has recommended that we use Prednisone to suppress her immune response to the allergen. He warned that there WILL be side effects, and they would likely be fatal on a long enough timeline. I was told it's a matter of time before she has organ failure or other potentially fatal side effects, but that it may improve her quality of life in the meantime. Anyone have any success using Prednisone long-term for their cats? How long can a cat be on it? Is it really a death sentence eventually? Thank you for any help on this.
