More than 12 500 cyclists are taking over the roads and highways of the city of Johannesburg on Sunday morning. • The Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg has attracted cyclists from all over the country including 20 countries beyond the borders of South Africa. • Race Director Fritz Pienaar says more they will give away just over R1-million in prizes. • The first man and woman at the finish line will each get R200 000. • Meanwhile, it's been a busy week for the organisers of the event, riders and cycling shops alike. Bikevibe Editor-in-Chief, Njanji Chauke spent the day at Dunkeld Cycles in Johannesburg with William Bush, a former professional cyclist and now Director at the same shop. • Bush has urged cyclists to prepare themselves and equipment alike in advance and ahead of any major race. Just this weekend, his shop, Dunkeld Cycles was teeming with cyclists and triathletes as they brought their bicycles for service and just general maintenance. Bush has cautioned against waiting until the last minute to drop off your bicycle for service. He advises cyclists to do the following ahead of any cycling race. • 1. Spend time on the saddle - Cycle more • 2. Follow an eating program - Tweak nutrition or diet • 3. Do high mileage riding - Train with groups or bunches or get a coach • 4. Check your Bike for wear and tear on brakes, cassette, cabling and tyres • Meanwhile, as the cycling season reaches its peak - Bush Dunkeld Cycles has been much busier with sales for bicycles, servicing, cycling accessories and bike fit. Besides the Ride Joburg race, there's an Ironman event, the Munga and Old Mutual Double Century coming up soon. • As for Njanji Chauke, a day after his interview with Willaim Bush, he exchanged his car for a bicycle, by riding the same route to check hif fitness level and just to conduct a recce ahead of the race on Sunday. Chauke, a social rider and crossfitter will be taking part in the race to raise funds for a school in Thembisa.
