Jason Mitchell walks through the basic checklist of gear items recommended for walking on early ice along with recommended ice thicknesses for walking, ATV and vehicle travel. • Three to four inches of hard, clear ice will generally support a walking adult. Five to six inches of good ice will typically support a snowmobile or small ATV. Twelve inches of good ice is recommended for supporting a full size vehicle. • Recommended equipment includes ice cleats for walking on slippery ice along with a spud bar. A hard swing with most spud bars will chip about three inches of ice. Use the spud bar to check ice ahead of you as you walk. Other safety items include ice pics, throw rope and float suit.
